Thanks to MARVEL and especially X-MEN editor Michael MARTS for allowing this thread to happen and for giving this X-tra job to Gab!
Special thanks to Richard ISANOVE and Gabriele too for their hard work and for the X-traordinary final look of the cover!
Special note : the 7 layouts Gab did for the ASTONISHING X-MEN # 1 variant cover will be included in the ASTONISHING X-MEN # 1 DIRECTOR'S CUT special edition.

great pics! ..altough I like Gab's pencilled version of the final cover better than Isanove's colored one ..it has more class. Not that I mind Richard Isanove, he is a great artist and colorist. I heard Richard isanove was going to do a creator owned project with a french company ..anybody heard about this ??

The Cover is pretty, but I thought there should definitely be a woman on it... Who were the other caracters? White Queen and ...? Best wishes, Hekate!

..that Isanove stuff looks damn sweet!! Guess I have to go hunting for a French comic ..ah, I did it before with Gab's Arcatera, Die dunkle Bruderschaft. I understand German a wee bit better than French, but it is still more a book with great pictures than a comic I enjoy reading..

I was a little worried when I heard someone else was painting the Gabe drawing. However, it looks amazing! Hats off to ya Gabe, you rock!

Hi, I colored that cover a couple of weeks ago, and I thought I'd drop by to say hello. Thanks for the kind words. And for the not so kind ones, sorry, I'll do better next time. It was a pleasure working with Gabriele. I saw him signing at Angouleme last year and I was blown away by his sketckes. It was intimidating to work with someone that usually paints his own drawings and is good at it. I looked at some of his other stuff and noticed he liked to use light as a story telling device, to put the accent on what he wants to stand out, like a spot light. On this cover, Gabriele used a backlighting at the bottom of the figure and a strong lateral light at the top. His idea, he told me, was to have the figure go very dark at the bottom. It was a little complicated because recently, I've been working with people that use only one light source so I had to switch gears a little bit. It's cool though, it forces you to think a little differently than usual. I used a simple primary color combination(yellow, blue and red), to try and bring a classic Comics feel to the piece. It's good that they brought back the old costume (almost), I think it a very strong design and it's easy to make it look cool. I like the final piece and I'm glad Gabriele seems to have liked it too. I'd like to thank him for the opportunity. I can't imagine how hard it would be to have someone else color my drawings.
Bye, take it easy, -Richard Isanove
